Despite being a successful executive director for a nonprofit, Martin Lowenstein originally intended to go into civil engineering. Although his technical career was brief, he continues to use his engineering degree and his later business degree in his role as the first executive director of Friends of China Camp, which oversees the management of China Camp State Park. Although that wasn't initially what he had planned to accomplish with his degree, even the best-laid plans can alter.

The Friends of China Camp stepped in to assist the California Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) in managing the day-to-day operations of the China Camp State Site after the state agency threatened to close the park in 2012. In 2016, four years after taking office, Lowenstein joined the FOCC as executive director, significantly expanding its financial capabilities. Lowenstein likes the park in his free time, just like other park visitors. He spends his time exercising on the trails, socializing at the old cafe, and occasionally camping in Back Ranch Meadows.
